Designed for a group exhibition featuring work by winners of the 2019 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers, Just Looking was a multimedia display of projects by EXTENTS that interrogated the materiality of digital culture. Tiered levels of lavender foam-padded platforms supported the physical stuff of media — including an off-the-shelf data center floor system, computer monitors, and extension cords — to create digital platforms for displaying recent projects by our firm. The double reading of platform on platform found form through custom-milled low-density fiberboard and high-density foam padding embossed with design elements abstracted from architectural drawing software, which provided the substrate for screens that presented images and videos of our built and speculative work. Additional foam cylinders provided seating that could be moved around the gallery by visitors, allowing them to engage with the installations of other winners from different vantage points. The piece prompted onlookers to question their media viewing habits and to draw relationships between all the work featured in the gallery.
